Founded in 2010, Food Sovereignty Tours is Food First’s educational travel program. Our mission is to build the global and US movements for food sovereignty through solidarity travel and immersion learning. Food sovereignty is the right of all peoples to healthy, culturally appropriate and sustainably produced food, and to the resources they need to produce food.

Our tours offer you an opportunity to experience the food sovereignty movement first-hand in international destinations and meet the people on the ground working on the world’s food struggles. Through one- to two-week educational tours, you will learn how you are connected to the global food system and acquire knowledge and strategies you can use to create just, sustainable and healthy food systems in your own community.

To create these educational tours, we draw upon Food First’s robust, 39-year network of farmers and food producers, social justice organizations and activist-scholars around the world. We strive to ensure that local perspectives take precedence, and that the tour cost benefits local organizations, movements and small businesses. Every Food Sovereignty Tour is accompanied by a Food First activist-researcher-educator with extensive knowledge, relationships and expertise in the destination country, offering an experiential seminar in food sovereignty.

Tours include meetings with key food system players such as producers; NGOs; movement leaders; representatives from unions and producer associations; schools and educators; researchers; activists; journalists; and policy-makers. In addition to our public tour offerings, we also offer private tours for your group of 8 or more.

Students from  Goddard College can get academic credit to travel on

Food Sovereignty Tours!

The unique travel study program visits Cuba, Italy and the Basque region in northern Spain.

The Food First-Goddard partnership allows students who complete a 10-day tour as of January, 2016 to earn up to three credits toward a bachelor’s degree at Goddard College. Goddard College will also award a $1,000 Partnership Grant to FST alumni who enroll in an undergraduate program at Goddard College.
