Joyce E. King, PhD

Joyce E. King, PhD, holds the Benjamin E. Mays Endowed Chair of Urban Teaching, Learning and Leadership in the Department of Educational Policy Studies at Georgia State University. Dr. King received a PhD in the Social Foundations of Education and a BA degree in Sociology at Stanford University. As a W.K. Kellogg Foundation Fellowship recipient, she studied women’s participation in grassroots social change movements in Africa, South America and France. Dr King has served as Provost of Spelman College, Associate Provost at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York and Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic and Diversity Affairs at the University of New Orleans. She has also served Head of the Department of Ethnic Studies at Mills College and as a Visiting faculty member at Stanford University and the Federal University of São Carlos in Brazil.

Her publications include numerous journal articles and books, including: “Re-membering” History in Student and Teacher Learning: An Afrocentric Culturally Informed Praxis, Black Education: A Transformative Research and Action Agenda for the New Century; Preparing Teachers for Diversity; Teaching Diverse Populations; and Black Mothers to Sons: Juxtaposing African American Literature with Social Practice. Dr. King is President of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), a professional association of 25,000 U.S. and international education researchers, policy makers and practitioners.
