In September 2014, the Latin American Society of Agroecology (SOCLA) conducted an educational tour of California with the participation of 23 Latin American partners. The goal of the tour was to explore and better understand California’s system of industrial agriculture and the advances and challenges of organic farming and food justice movements the state. The tour also aimed to raise awareness about experiences of agroecology in Latin America. The tour visited important sites of organic farming and urban agriculture in California. In addition, three events were held in the University of California, Berkeley, Davis and Santa Cruz, in which Latin American agroecologists shared their knowledge and experiences. Tour participants also had the opportunity to provide suggestions for improving agroecological practices at some of the California farms that they visited. Useful links between agroecologists and researchers were created, and the ties between SOCLA and Food First were strengthened. The tour was made possible with support from the CS Fund and the Christensen Fund as well as funds from SOCLA itself and the participants themselves. The videos below from the SOCLA Tour (Spanish only) were produced by Food First fellow Leonor Hurtado.
