Our Commitment

Food First Board of Trustees | 12.24.2020

As 2020, a year fraught with multiple challenges ends, Food First, a “Think and Do Tank,” looks to the new year with a renewed commitment to raising awareness about and providing solutions which transform the existing food system that fails so many.

We remain steadfast in our efforts to confront the root causes of hunger in the US and globally. Food First reaffirms our belief that all working people, especially food system workers, are entitled to dignified work that provides livable wages and safe working conditions.

We will continue to learn and advocate in partnership with small independent farmers, especially BIPOC farmers, as they seek equity in access to land and capital, control over agricultural resources, and opportunities to be paid fairly for their services and products in order to sustain their farms, families, and communities.

We will continue to stand in solidarity with researchers, activists, and producers promoting agroecology and indigenous food systems, recognizing both as environmentally just pathways for cultivating a more resilient and sustainable food system.

Food sovereignty and social justice are at the core of who we are, what we believe in, message about and fight for. We stand firmly in opposition to and abhor racism, white supremacy, misogyny and all forms of discrimination and harassment.  Food First remains ready to collaborate with all who are inspired to join in championing this justice driven effort. We move with purpose and urgency because the beneficiaries we serve, marginalized people, need our help and support now!

For nearly fifty years, Food First has stood as a beacon, interrogating the injustices in society and shining a light on collective efforts to build a more equitable and sustainable world. We pledge to continue the fight in 2021 and for as long as necessary for food sovereignty and justice to prevail!
