August 12, 2014, Columbia, MO—The US Food Sovereignty Alliance (USFSA) is pleased to announce that it  will host the 2014 Food Sovereignty Prize award ceremony on October 15 in Des Moines, Iowa. The first Food Sovereignty Prize was presented in Des Moines during the 2009 Community Food Security Coalition conference to counter the World Food Prize, which emphasizes increased food production through technology in the footsteps of Norman Borlaug.

Since its launch, the Food Sovereignty Prize has garnered international attention for its recognition of community-based efforts supporting food democracy. La Via Campesina, the international peasant organization recognized for coining the term ‘food sovereignty’, received the inaugural award for promoting the right to food for all people and dignity for those who bring food to our plates.

The USFSA represents a network of food producer, labor, environmental, faith-based, social justice and anti-hunger advocacy organizations. Additional supporters include Iowa CCI, WILPF-Des Moines and Occupy the World Food Prize.
Prize recipients and additional details will follow.
